The Absolute Best Pasta in Durham

The Absolute Best Pasta in Durham

Pasta in Durham is a full-contact sport, and you’re about to see why. You can hit Devil's for a beef patty with coco bread that lands like a New York curveball, then drift over to Pulcinella's for eggplant parmesan that’s crunchy enough to wake the dead.

We ate through it all. The range here stretches from a chef’s four-course dare at Convivio to Melina’s fig and Gorgonzola ravioli that will ruin frozen dinners for you.

Your only job is figuring out where to start. Consider this your cheat sheet.

Highlights
Fresh dough for perfect home pizza
Ravioli flavors like fig and Gorgonzola
Outstanding pasta quality, every time
Easy freeze-and-thaw convenience
Pairs beautifully with creamy sauces

You walk into Melina's and immediately smell the flour. That's a good sign. Fresh dough for home pizza, sure, but the ravioli is where I lose my mind. Fig and Gorgonzola sounds like a mistake, but it's a miracle. The pasta quality holds up every single time, no excuses. Freeze it, forget it, pull it out on a Tuesday, and suddenly you're eating like a person with their life together. Creamy sauces cling to it like they're scared to let go. My only complaint? I run out too fast. Grab extra. You'll thank me later.

Convivio does this chef's choice four-course thing that feels like a dare. Take it. The lasagna tastes like someone's nonna actually cared, not like a frozen slab of regret. Truffle risotto shows up and steals the whole show, and I wasn't even mad about it. The owner walks around like he's proud of every plate, which is rare and honestly refreshing. Go with a group, order family-style, and brace yourself for leftovers you'll fight over. It's not cheap, but you're paying for someone who gives a damn. That's worth something.

Cucciolo Osteria makes me angry, and not just because the portions are tiny and the prices are big. The pasta is fresh, delicious, the kind of thing you'd forgive almost anything for. Almost. The service was dismissive, straight-up racist, and I got ignored at the bar like I was a ghost haunting the place. The atmosphere is gorgeous, which makes it hurt worse. You're sitting in a beautiful room with great food, and you still feel like you don't belong. I wanted to love it. Instead, I left with a full stomach and a sour taste that wasn't the food.

Tight tables, long nights

Alimentari at Mothers & Sons is the lunch move you didn't know you needed. The tuna sandwich gets raved about, and for once, the hype is accurate. Chicken Parm and chickpeas show up on the same plate and just work, like a weird couple that's secretly perfect. The Bloody Mary is spicy enough to wake up your ancestors. The interior is classic and beautiful, all wood and quiet charm. You'll sit there, eat slow, and forget you have a phone. It's a relaxing lunch that deserves repeating, especially if you're tired of pretending fast-casual is fine.

Gocciolina gets a lot right, and then it gets a few things just slightly wrong. The carbonara needs a minute more on the heat, but you'll forgive it because the roasted potatoes are actual genius. I'm talking crispy, salty, the kind of side dish that becomes the main character. The lamb converted people who swore they hated lamb, which is a miracle I witnessed with my own eyes. Staff is friendly, but you need a reservation because this place fills up. Finish with the torte, which is unforgettable in the best way. You'll leave planning your next visit.

Pulcinella's is the kind of place you go when you want to feel rich without spending like it. The marinara tastes fresh, like someone actually crushed tomatoes instead of opening a can. Portions are big enough to feed a small army, and the prices will make you do a double take. The eggplant parmesan is crunchy on the outside, succulent on the inside, and I'm not being dramatic. Service is attentive without hovering, which is a lost art. You'll get leftovers guaranteed, and your wallet will still be intact. That's a win in my book.

Pomodoro Italian Kitchen is a family-run operation that works harder than a dog chasing a bone. The cannelloni with meat sauce is comfort in a bowl, and the vodka sauce is so good you'll want to bathe in it. Portions are massive, so come hungry or make friends with a stranger to share. The margaritas are the best in town, and I'll fight anyone who disagrees. Homemade gelato brought back memories of Germany, which is random but true. It's unpretentious, it's delicious, and it's exactly what you want when you're tired of fancy nonsense.

Melo Trattoria & Tapas is an unassuming spot that will sneak up on you. The vodka bolognese ravioli is the star, creamy and rich and just ridiculous. Sauces are made to order, which means you're waiting a little longer, but you're also eating something that didn't sit under a heat lamp. The calamari surprised me, and this is an inland spot, so that's saying something. Staff never lets you down, even when the place is packed. It's the kind of joint you stumble into and then never shut up about. Unforgettable bites in a place you'd normally drive past.

Cugino Forno is my family's go-to pizza spot, and for good reason. The Napoletana has this sweet pepper tang that makes you wonder why other pizzas don't try harder. The crust is light, fluffy, and actually tastes Italian, not like a cracker pretending. It's true to its roots, and you can taste the pride in every bite. Pickup at Golden Belt is easy, which matters when you're juggling kids and hunger. You'll order one pizza and then order another one to go. That's how it goes. Simple, honest, and better than half the places charging double.

Carrabba's is a chain, I know, but hear me out. I did a wedding tasting there and they handled it beautifully, no stress, no drama. Staff goes above and beyond, especially when you're juggling dietary requests and a million questions. They have take-home entrees at ten bucks, which is a steal for date night. I showed up for an impromptu dinner with low expectations and left pleasantly surprised. It's budget-friendly, but it doesn't taste like it. If you're on a tight schedule or a tight wallet, this is the move. Just don't tell anyone I recommended a chain.

If you want New York flavor without the subway sweat, Devil's has you covered. The pizza is real, the pasta tastes like it came from a borough, and the beef patty with coco bread? That's a curveball that lands. I'd say don't try any other spot in Durham, but you already know that's the move. It's the kind of place where you walk in hungry and leave feeling like you've been handled. The staff doesn't fuss over you, which I appreciate. Just good food, quick service, and a bill that won't make you question your life choices.

Mothers & Sons is the kind of place you go to feel fancy but leave with sauce on your chin. The burrata and mozzarella are ridiculous, and the seasonal pesto with ramps? I didn't know ramps had a fan club, but now I'm a member. The bucatini takes its sweet time, but it's worth every minute of waiting. Tables are tight, so prepare to become best friends with the couple next to you. Finish with the gianduja budino, which is a dessert that sounds like a spell but tastes like a hug. Long nights, small plates, zero regrets.
